Eleven Years of Uprising / Multi-Sided Civil, Sectarian, and Proxy War in Syria
2022, aluminum plates, screws, newspaper pages, 60 x 42 x 16 cm.
From the start of the uprising in Syria in 2011, I followed the developments of the ever-changing conflict through the reports in the International New York Times. At times, the newspaper published reports every day. Sometimes these were hopeful, but more often they detailed horrific details of a worsening humanitarian crisis. In response to some of these articles, I created the works "A Protester in Homs, Syria," and "Gazes From Syria: Ten Years of Uprising, Multi-Sided Civil, Sectarian, and Proxy War." The growing stack of newspaper pages started to become a burden, and eventually, I decided to create a holding device. These two thick plates of aluminum hold about 1500 newspaper pages, with all articles published by the newspaper about the conflict in Syria from 15 March 2011 to 15 March 2022. Like a vault, the work preserves the news reports but also prevents access to them.
