Toppled
2006-2010, a series of lectures, a book and a video,
Toppled is a case study about the functioning of public images in the light of art history, media studies and identity politics, based on an trove of images of the fallen statues of Saddam Hussein collected from the Internet. A close reading of the images reveals an astonishing amount of information: the history of the statues and their fall, people’s attitudes towards them, the way the media used the images to deliver their message and how the image of the falling statue was turned into an icon that is still being used as a symbol in many diverse contexts.
The book was nominated for the Dutch Doc Award for documentary photography in 2011.
